Where were you in 1974? Yes, it was a long time ago, but it was a very good year. Bell bottoms were big — pun intended. Stripes were in vogue. Men in Tucson still owned suits. We didn’t have cell phones, iPads, laptops or even desktops. Northeast Tucson was a dusty, rural desert community.

And, TVLC? It was growing. The mission congregation had moved from the Villa Caprice Apartment clubhouse to Wrightstown Elementary School and had called its first pastor, Pastor Robert Linder.

Calling our First Pastor

At 10:30 am on All Saints Sunday, November 4, 1973, Tanque Verde Lutheran Church began holding services in the club house of the Villa Caprice Apartments on the corner of Pantano and Wrightstown Roads. One hundred people, representing forty families, were led in worship by Pastor Robert L. Linder, Mission Developer, and The Rev. Howell Foster, representing the Lutheran Church in America, Division for Mission in North America.

Where is the coffee?

Nearly a year later on October 6, 1974, Tanque Verde Lutheran Church, with well over one hundred and sixty members, became a full-fledged congregation of the Lutheran Church in America, and member Bob Rencken became the first Congregational President. In the spring of 1974, services were moved to the Wrightstown Elementary School, while plans were started for a building on land at 8625 E. Tanque Verde Road, projected to begin in 1975. The new and expanding community of faith was featured in the November 1973 issue of The Lutheran, the national publication of the LCA.
